The egg shell is too high in calcium, I thought.. Since laying feed is, I figured egg shell would be too. I could be wrong though... I just go out and pick up tiny rocks..

Egg shells aren't hard enough. They will break down & get soft. Grit, or rocks, do not. They act like tiny teeth, pulverizing the food so the chicken can digest it.

Ever heard the saying "scarce as a hen's teeth"? That's right, chickens don't have them! Instead they eat tiny pebbles and store them in their "crop". When the food enters their crop, the pebbles grind it up to make digestion easier. For baby chicks, sand, parakeet gravel or canary gravel, available at your local pet store or grocery store pet aisle, will suffice. You can either sprinkle this in their feed or provide it in a small cup or bowl.

A small piece of bread soaked in olive oil might help pass things through for now. Then provide grit as the others have stated. Sprinkle parakeet grit down on their flooring, they instinctively will peck at it and eat it.

I suggest the grit too. I checked pet stores for smaller bird grit on my way to our nearest farm store and the employees looked at me like I was crazy they don't carry any grit for pet birds. I would go straight for the farm store and get some chick grit.

That's what that it!!!! I've caught mine doing that I wasn't sure if they were going to crow but hoping they wouldn't
