i have a baby chick that had trouble hatching and so i assisted. normally i don’t assist because if it was strong enough and healthy enough it would have made it, but this chick is important to a friend and will be treated more like a pet. after getting out of the egg i noticed it was breathing kind of hard and kept one of its legs wrapped around its back end or stretched completely out behind it.

will the leg right itself over time? or does it look deformed? is there anything i can do to help?

I had a chick that had a similar leg to hers. We tapped it to try and bring it downwards, it didn’t work. Hers was deformed, and I think your chick also has a deformed leg. A deformed leg also means she most likely will pass away of heart failure, or something similar to that. I noticed as my chick got older her feathers didn’t grow right. She lived to be 3 months, but she passed away almost 3 weeks ago. I hope your chick makes it, and maybe I’ll learn a little bit about helping chicks with deformed legs from this post :)

awh i’m sorry about your chicken. i bet she lived a good and happy three months! i hope we can both learn from this post.

Its hard to tell from this photo if its a deformity or just the chick sprawling out or being awkward from the way it was in the egg. When my Ayam Cemani chick hatched he sprawled out like this with one leg a couple times causing me to panic. In a day or so he was up no problem. As soon as this chick is dry you'll want to see what's going on. The slick bottom of this incubator isn't going to do you any favors but rather can make the issue worst.

You can make a brace of sorts to help the leg come more to a correct position. He may not ever be 100% back to normal but in most cases if done correctly there will be improvement

would putting a paper towel in the incubator help?

Usually you want to put a rubber mat or something down to help the chicks from slipping. At this point by the time you did it you should be able to just remove the chick since I'd assume its pretty dry

i’m not sure how to explain it or if you can see it in the picture but there is a bump in the chicks hip area that is not on the other side and i’m pretty sure it’s connected to the chick stretching out it’s leg. the chick can move that leg and looks like he is trying to get it under him but can’t. anyone have any ideas?
