Three days ago now we bought 2 mottled houdans from our favorite feed store. They are the cutest things ever and we are exited to finally have a crested variety on our farm, but one of them is driving us insane with her constant panicking and loud loud peeping. Shes so loud we can hear her outside of the front door and in the back yard. She takes a break every now and then but starts up again frantically peeping and running the length of the cage poking her beak through looking for a way out! We have never had this behavior from any of the chicks we have ever raised and although these are our last two of our chicken season we would like some peace in the house. Does any one know of any solutions? They are probably a week or so old in an old rat cage with a heat lamp hanging above. We used this for all of our chicks this year so that's probably not the problem.

*UPDATE*
Well, it looks like we are down to the option of just getting them a third little buddy, nothing is working, wrapping the cage made them even more upset, the radio didn't phase them, and the stuffed animal almost killed them(They were so scared of it!) The only thing that really works is staying in the room with them, the minute they can't see us they freak out really loudly. I snuggle with them several times a day already, they aren't hand friendly just yet but I'm working on it, they chill out after a few seconds of being held and they rush the door when I open it. They are so funny because once the door opens they run for their lives and scream when I catch them lol. I want them to be the the most social birds we have, but not so social that they have separation anxiety D:

The Cochin chicks they had are the same age but are a bit bigger so we are going to get one for them. We have a big white cochin already and we haven't seen her in more than a month because shes living in a nesting box on top of some golf balls.

That's her in the front. She is Luffa and her buddy in the back Harlem.

One of mine did that and she was cold. I have a guinea pig cage as their temporary brooder and it was too drafty. I covered the sides and top, which solved the problem. The other chicks were fine with the same amount of feathering. Man, it sure does get loud, I hop you find the solution to what is bothering your beautiful chick.

Sounds like maybe she's too hot? Be sure the temp is around 90-95 degrees for new babies. And I think they say raise the heat lamp up five degrees every week. We hung the heat lamp on our brooder off to one side so they can escape the heat if they need too. I wonder though...hm.

Henderson's says they handle confinement well, are docile and easily handled. (But then, chickens are individuals.) Does she quiet down when you hold her? You could try a small stuffed animal I guess.

Of course there cound be something wrong with ehr that you can't see. I hope not.

Gorgeous little chick. I think I'd tie cardboard up the sides of that wire about a foot or so, most of the way around your pen. I'm thinking that would help her to feel more closed in/secure. Can't tell where your lamp is, but maybe aim it toward the most secluded corner...

Our heat lamp is on one end of the cage also and they sleep all over the place. We haven't turned on the AC yet so our house is warm during the day and the hang out on the other end of the cage away from the light, but as it gets later they sleep in the middle of the cage and at night they sleep under the lamp but not piled on top of each other. I'm worried about her making herself sick with all this panicking, shes really healthy though, she takes time out of her noisy day to eat and drink. I'll wrap a towel around the cage and see what happens, our thermometer is broken and we need a new one(its been broken for a while). One of the only things I can think of that has changed in between these guys and the last batch (three silkies and an ameraucana) is that they are no longer in the unfinished hallway because it is now a finished hallway.

Wow thanks for all the replies!

Hm. Maybe inspect her close up. Specifically...her bottom. Grose yes, but I had a chic that was pasted up and was completely blocked off from going potty. Once I helped her with that situation she happy and is now a thriving chic. Don't think she would have made it 24 more hours otherwise. Cleaning a chic butt...now that's love! lol
