Chick in danger! Please Help!

I am so thankful to hear your chick made it. I really didn't think it would from what you described, but I'm sure your quick thinking with the plaster saved it's life. So way to go. I wish you would explain about the plaster and also the spray plaster I am interested to hear how that works and is this some sort of medicine or just something you thought of in a hurry? thanks. It's always good to hear what might work in an emergency. Please keep us updated on how this little one is doing and hoping for the best for it and you.

And yeah its area is changed twice a day so far as it pooping quite alot! And it is awful I don't know what came over her she was great the first 2 weeks and in the last week she got bored despite the fact she was waited on hand and foot and given fatty foods (porriadge, corn, soggy bread) and then she just abandoned her last 2 eggs after eating the other two!

I won't be giving her eggs ever again that's for sure.

(Not sure how to qoute two things in one post..so..)

@Miss Lydia
Thanks! Yes it is amazing how it has survied so far and I wish I had taken a picture of it when I first found him to show you all the transformation in the little guy! And at first I just used an ordinary plaster out of hurry but my Dad has this spray on plaster that he has used before, which is also anti-septic, and it had healed a wound he had on his hand which normally would of needed stiches! So we tried it out on the chick waited a few minutes for it to dry and it didn't seem to do much but not around 4 hours later a nice scab has come over and the slight swollenuss has gone down massively! For those interested this is what we used
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Elastoplast...H1ZM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304516159&sr=8-1
and I highly recommend it for any difficult injury your hen/chick recieves, however you have to be very careful not to spray it on any over open areas e.g. eyes, beak, nostrils and we had to be very careful not to spray its vent area as it would stop it pooing!

Here are some pictures of the chick, it had just eaten some wet porridge so it was getting sleepy by the end!

Update:

Chick survired yet another night!
Yet here are some things
Good:-
o Has drank alot of sugar water by itself today out of small bottle cap i keep refilled at all times
o Has eaten about 2 tea spoons worth of cooked porriadge
o Legs have become stronger and it can now walk in straight line! It still occasinally stumbles over but I think thats pretty normal for 3 day old chick.
o Most importantly the wound has scabbed over great and isnt infected!

Bad:-
o I dont know what it is..but its hardly opened its eyes all day and yet is active in itself? Only when I take it out of the brooder and put it on the floor will it opens its eyes and scream its head off and run toward me? Its like hardly opened its eyes at all in the brooder!? I was worried it was going blind by the light bulb perhaps?? Its only 60watt as the conservatory is boiling and 100wat was making it pant. Could a lightbulb too close to it makes it close its eyes alot?? Im slightly concerned about this but it has opened its eyes and I have checked them and there seems to be nothing wrong...

Luckily thats the only bad thing and I'm grateful it has made it this far.

it could be the light, imagine if we had a 60 watt bulb right down in our face. try raising it up or better yet can you get a red light bulb? that makes it a hole lot easier for it to sleep also. be sure to check the temperature where you are keeping it, you don't want it to get over heated, or cold,
on the brighter side sounds so good to hear it's eating and drinking, you have done a fantastic job.. TLC can do wonders.. keep up the good work!!

My little ones who started under a broody but had to be moved into the house for medical attention kept their eyes closed too! I think those early days after hatch are usually spent under mama's belly where it's dark, so they just aren't accustomed to bright light or even cued to have their eyes open by instinct. I am so impressed by your hard work and compassion and I'm glad you've got such a lovely chick to show for it!

Thanks for your responses Miss Lydia and TeamChaos!
I was unable to move the light much further away instead i have provoided half of the box with a small house that i made up (only from cardboard) and the area in there is nice and dark yet warm from the light still, it goes in there alot now and I even saw it open its eyes when it was in there and then it saw the new "toy" I had given it. A small mirror probed up against the corner. It walked over to it made some chattering noises and spent around 5 minutes pecking its reflection before dozing off again, so perhaps this new shelter from the light is working?!
Also that is a interesting point TeamChaos...It did spend 26hours hatching under a dark broody and then spent 3 hours under her after it hatched, unfornatuely that was all the time the two had together (Though the hens quickly placed herself on new eggs within a few hours of her baby being taken away so her mourning didn't last long...).
I will update tomorrow on whether it lives through the night, as it is still early days yet, and also on how its progress is going!
Thank you all for your compliments on the tlc im giving it..I'm not used to looking after something that needs 24hour care and it is slightly difficult as I am now having to revise for my exams that begin next week!
Hope everyone is well and thanks for posting!
