Chick left ice-cold all night but still alive

If it does hatch, which will likely take a while, it may be weak or a fighter. Even if it is a bit weak, you can give it some extra tlc until it is strong enough.

I had a late-hatching quail once who couldn't stand properly and kept falling over even days after she hatched and started to get her pin feathers, and now she is a healthy beautiful silver tuxedo quail who lays really pretty blue-green eggs. I gave her water by dripping it onto her beak for her to lick off, and she could thankfully eat by herself.

Was the egg under a broody hen? There's really no definitive answer.

I've had several hatch, after a broody has given up on them, and I've taken them in to the incubator. Plenty hatched just fine, and developed with no problems. An occasional problem arises, which could be why the hen gave up on them to begin with.

The egg was under a broody but she had so many eggs under her the egg got pushed to the back behind her bum and that's how it got left out.

She may have pushed it there on purpose. I believe they can "feel" the progress and they move them around accordingly.

Could also be one that she suspects won't hatch. So still a tossup, but I bet it will be fine.

Just an update on the little chick:

Ivory actually scared the life out of me when she started hatching two days early. The yolk was not fully absorbed and blood vessels were everywhere. She did live though and now is a very happy, healthy 6 week old chick! She was noticeably smaller than her chick-mate who was one day older than her but she is a fighter.

And a very fuzzy picture (because she was running around everywhere) of her now. :)

She's a very stubborn chick and is always escaping out of her pen. I'm so thankful that she made it through. Especially since she hatched very early.
