Hello

I have a question on mail order chick losses.

I have had chicks going on 4 years now. This is the first year I have seen substantial loss from my catalog ordered chicks.
The weather is actually better this year than previous years for temp. I have multiple options (both heat lamp and board incubators) for heat sources. I’m in lower MI
All the chicks were alive when received and were eating and drinking. No pasty butt and then suddenly I’ve lost 3 within the first 48.
I’ve seen where some places say this is above normal but wasn’t sure what others have experienced. but I have not experienced this ever before.
Maybe it’s just not my year but any input is appreciated. Thanks!

I’ve usually had a good survival rate with mail order chicks. Just make sure they won’t be sitting in the post office all weekend, and if you order the grow gel stuff they’ll be happier.

How big is the bulb in your lamp? Is it 250 watt? Have you checked the temperature under your heat lamp? I notice that none of the chicks are resting in the center of the glow, but around it. You may have your heat lamp set too low, and they are getting too hot.

I will raise it and see
