Normal chicken behavior she's practicing! Chickens scratch in the dirt to look for seed, bugs, whatever, and to make a shallow bowl in which to dust bathe. Just wait until she starts kicking and flopping around in the little hole - you'll think it's convulsions! LOL. Perfectly normal. To keep the food and water clean, lay something flat in the brooder to make a low platform, about 1-inch. Like a piece of board or plywood, scrap of a doormat, even a small pie pan turned upside down. Put your feeder and waterer on that to keep them above the wood chips.

I put mine up on a paver sitting up on a tote lid to keep bedding and water separated as far as possible.

I set mine on something like a small dog or cat dish. I had to wait until they were all tall enough to drink

Yes. They pack wood chips in the feeder and waterer so tight that it’s impossible to get any food. They know we have absolutely nothing else to do but to undo what they have done.

Yeah when I saw mine hatch I was over the moon and was overloaded with happiness, now I’m just a butler for them
