Chick minimum to add to flock of 5?

Just wondering how this went? 😊
Well you see what had happened was…chicken math.

I have 10 now but one is a rooster that will be rehomed. My coop is literally 20 feet from my bedroom window and I don’t plan to wake up at 4 AM. I really wanted an olive egger so I got 2 to be safe and good thing I did because one was indeed a rooster!

2 marans (sex-linked and black copper), 2 olive eggers, and a lavender Orpington. Right now no difference in noise level but the newbies haven’t started laying yet…

We’ll see!

We all understand chicken math. Lol. Congratulations!

Well I have a horrible update. This morning my suspected new rooster crowed for the first time (which was fine) and confirmed his gender. He then attempted to mount my black copper maran (both only 3 months old), there was a tussle, and she died immediately. It looks like her neck was broken in the struggle. She was my most anticipated new egg and more importantly she was one of my favorites. I immediately got rid of the rooster so this wouldn’t happen again. I’m so upset.

Now exactly where I started when I posted this plus being heartbroken: I want a black copper maran hen and know adding just one chick won’t go well, and adding 2 is dubious.
