I have 3 7 week old wyanndottes, but one of them is significantly smaller and one side has much fewer feathers and the ones that she does have stick out in all directions. I haven't seen any of the others picking on her and she eats well and is very active. The left side of her neck is completely bald and under her left wing is bald. The right side is fine.
Any ideas??

I have pictures but don't know how to post them on here.

Could be mites or lice, which would account for the balding patches and ruffled feathers (she might have been "itching herself"). Use Sevin dust and/or mite control dust in the coop. I would diagnose it first, though, my opinion could be wrong!

I also have chicks that should be feathered in but are not. In my case, they are 4 - 8 week old Mottled bantam Cochins. I know that mine don't have any lice or mites. ALL of the other chicks that came with them from MM are fully feathered. Some of those are also bantam cochins, just different colors!

They eat plenty. Amazingly, none of the other are pecking at their bald spots! It completely baffles me as to why. Maybe we'll both find an answer.

these chickens have a modifying gene that does not let them get feathers
such as if one breeds frizzle to frizzle too long it will not have hardly any feathering

I would say it was a inbreeding gene that is causing this malformed feathers

there is not much you can do except try and feed them a good wet mash probiotic with vitamins

email me for any recipe

Thanks a million Glenda!!!

That's about what I was thinking ( inbreeding ). I keep hoping that they'll finally get their feathers but in some places there doesn't even look to be any shafts.

I have some vitamins and yogurt, so I'll give those a try and we'll see what happens. These Mottled bantam cochins are sooo tame my 1 1/2 year old can get them and carry them around. I hope they'll get to looking better.

I read excessive temperature/dampness can have alot to do with feathers not comming in...I will try to find the link.

also to post a pic:

Look at the top blue band where it says Index, User list, Rules, Search, My Page, Profile, Recent posts, UPLOADS...etc etc...

When you want to add them in a post, Just click uploads and then click My Uploads in the bottom right corner and it will show your pics, highlight and copy the first link under your pic to creat a thmbnail, or the second one just below it to create the image right in your post.
