No offense taken but here's my 2 cents worth...IF we were living 100+ years ago I believe we 'softies' would have done just fine. We would survive one way or the other--those of us who find it very difficult to intentionally snuff the spark of life from a living creatures eyes, whether it's due to necessity, to eat it, take it out of pain, whatever, we might have been farmers, storekeepers, weavers,etc...I don't believe that everyone back then killed for survival either. Barter what you had to offer in exchange--those who could not/would not live off the land were not the ones who settled the wild west. Soft? Maybe in some folks eyes...
I believe I myself could euthanize/cull/kill, if I HAD to...but if there's a way to avoid it, guess what? I learned that after having my meaties butchered last fall--I was there, but did not do the neck slicing...I know in my head that it was time, that's what they had been raised for, they had had a good, short life...but tears welled up as I watched them in the killing cones struggling at the very end, that spark of life was so strong. I realized then that I did not have it in me to do the butchering myself. I will find a processor the next time and am content with that.
When faced with the situation Silkie Sue faced I hope I have the strength to do what needs to be done--my hats off to you! You did the right thing, especially knowing that it wouldn't be 'easy.'
