No offense taken but here's my 2 cents worth...IF we were living 100+ years ago I believe we 'softies' would have done just fine. We would survive one way or the other--those of us who find it very difficult to intentionally snuff the spark of life from a living creatures eyes, whether it's due to necessity, to eat it, take it out of pain, whatever, we might have been farmers, storekeepers, weavers,etc...I don't believe that everyone back then killed for survival either. Barter what you had to offer in exchange--those who could not/would not live off the land were not the ones who settled the wild west. Soft? Maybe in some folks eyes...
I believe I myself could euthanize/cull/kill, if I HAD to...but if there's a way to avoid it, guess what? I learned that after having my meaties butchered last fall--I was there, but did not do the neck slicing...I know in my head that it was time, that's what they had been raised for, they had had a good, short life...but tears welled up as I watched them in the killing cones struggling at the very end, that spark of life was so strong. I realized then that I did not have it in me to do the butchering myself. I will find a processor the next time and am content with that.
When faced with the situation Silkie Sue faced I hope I have the strength to do what needs to be done--my hats off to you! You did the right thing, especially knowing that it wouldn't be 'easy.'

Delco, I like your two cents...it's just what I was thinking too, no offense taken JoePa.

If we grow up and become "de-sensitized" to killing for our food, it wouldn't be a problem, IMO.

Silkie Sue, you were SO BRAVE! That is exactly what I would have done, panicked when the gasping started and ... the same way.

So sorry to hear about your loss, but you did the right thing.

Wow, it says "Just Hatched" under Joe's name. That's strange, seems like a "New Egg", hijacking a thread like that with his own issues.

Guess he just doesn't get BYC folks at all. (Or maybe just kind-hearted people in general?)

And apparently Joe here has lived as an "animal" as well, since he knows so much about what they know and feel?

And by the way, "Cheer up ladies" sounds just a tad demeaning, doesn't it?

I'm no lady to you, Joe.

Really ticks me off that you assume it's only "ladies" that have a problem killing something. Also ticks me off that you would post something like this in a persons thread that is clearly very upset!

I am also shocked you can reach a keyboard from that oh so HIGH horse!

My husband is super soft touch about killing anything. I don't know that he could cull anything. We are pet owners though. I have no issues being soft until I married my husband I was a vegetarian for years. I would do just fine not killing animals. I also believe that if I had grown up 100 years ago I would have learned those coping skills along the way as I learned how to humanely butcher our own food animals at home. But I didn't learn that stuff from my family.

It must be nice up there looking down in judgment....

ANYWAY!

to the original poster. Sorry.

I'm so sorry about your chick. You did the right thing even though it was hard. The right thing is very rarely the easy thing! It's good she is no longer suffering.

And it's not just ladies or even "softies" who have trouble with culling a chick.

My husband has been a hunter and fisher since he was a child and when we had a sick chick that was suffering it was very difficult for him to see the baby suffer and consider having to cull. Just because you are capable of a deed doesn't mean it shouldn't still effect you. There's a difference between a pet and a food source. Wouldn't you be bothered by putting down your dog or a puppy? There are people who eat those in the world.

The OP had never done such a thing before, of course it effects her. I would be seriously disturbed if it did not. Imagine if she came on here and was all bright and cheery about it?! Oh btw I had to gas "Fluffy" today, no biggie it didn't go well and then I had to slice his head off. Oh well off to bake cookies.... That would seem demented to me.

I'm sure under pressure of circumstances many people could do things they would never do otherwise.

the poor wee chick looked like he had hydrocephalus. HUGS to you, Silkie Sue (hey that rhymes!) I hope you are feeling better soon.

Sorry you had to do that but you really did the right thing. Don't sweat it too much.
