Chick not right update i just culled,,, awful experience

Well, I've calmed down a bit....
that was the first time i had to cull a chick and for those of you who haven't done it yet, i gotta say.... IT SUCKS!
i spent the good part of the morning reading posts on the best way to do the deed and thought that the gas chamber method would be the best as there is no pain and they just fall asleep, like carbon monoxide poisoning...
well, he didn't fall asleep..... i waited probably 2 minutes and i panicked because i thought is would take less time... watching him gasp for air was unbearable.
Next time... ( i hope there never is but the reality is there probably will be) i will go with what i did at the end... Now that was quick and painless...

I am so, so, so sorry that happened to you both. That must have been so horrible for you. But it was a very brave thing you did. It really, really was. You did right by that little guy, even as hard as it was. Good for you.

I am so sorry for your loss. You are a brave person who did a brave thing. Like another pp said, now my two little fuzzy butts who have passed on will have more friends to be with. Again, I am so sorry.

Please - I don't want to offend anyone but I do have a question - how would any of you have survived in the early days when people had to produce their own food - killing animals was then and is today as common as anything else - it seems we have made a normal natural thing into some kind of horrible act - I'm a hunter so I shoot animals - gut them, then butcher, then package the meat - eventually eat the meat - the meat is good organic meat - our society has gotten too soft and I'm afraid if things ever got really tough here in this country half of the people would starve because they don't know how to live if there isn't a grocery store down the street - and someone else is required to provide them with food - such a thought folks - when an animal dies it doesn't know what is happening - it doesn't have the ability to think ahead and worry about how it is going to feel - we humans have that ability to anticipate what it is going to feel like and that often makes it a lot harder for us - death is as natural as life - when you kill an animal you probably did it a favor - it doesn't have to go through the pains that are a part of living - so cheer up ladies

Not an easy job, but you did what was needed to be done. By the looks of it the chick would not have made it and just suffered.

I had a chick on the weekend with very much the same leg issue. Tried to correct it with tape, but was clear it was not going to come arround. Just a quick snip with a pair of sheers. Though it may sound barbaric it is quicker than gassing and far less suffering than the chick being trampled to death by two dozen health fuzzy butts.

The gas thing is not quick and not like the movies, CO2 suffocation is going to be stressfull, just think how it feels to not be able to breath. On top of that an oxygen starved brain can take minutes to die. Likely better with either (starting fluid) as it is an anisthetic and should knock the chick out faster before being a fatal dose.

The quicker the method the better, I did not like to snip the poor little guys head off, but it was much nicer to look at 24 health chicks than 25 with one flopping about getting squished.
