Chick pipped but yolk leaking out

I noticed an egg that had pipped. I checked on it in the middle of the night and it had made a big enough hole I could see its beak. However, I noticed it seemed to be sitting (the chick, not the egg) in yolk, or something yellow and slimy. This morning, I woke up and found it had died. Very curious as to what happened. Why didn't it absorb the yolk before it pipped? Could it have pipped before it was ready?

I think it's possible that, rather than yolk, the yellowish, sticky substance was actually excess moisture that was left in the egg. I've seen this happen with very dark-shelled eggs that didn't lose enough moisture, and it usually has a poor outcome for the chick.

Did you do an eggtopsy?

Hm .... I did not do an eggtopsy. It was the only egg that had pipped that didn't make it. I did notice when I put it into a zip lock bag with some other eggs that didn't make it, the egg slid upside down and yolk began oozing out. That's why I assumed it was yolk.
