Chick pulling out feathers of other chicks

In my experience with RIR Chickens...They are aggressive towards birds that are not the same colour...I had the issue here one year except I had 5 eating all my birds bare and pecking...I sold them and my other birds were happy without the constant aggression...I will never own a RIR again.

Good luck

That sounds similar to the RIR's and Production reds that I have! :/

The 9 six-week old chicks (now 8 with her separated) are in a 4x6 coop. My plan was to section off the big coop (10x16) and put the babies in there, but I think at the moment they can still fit through the wires. At what age do most integrate babies with adults? I have 3 adult speckled sussex.
Too small. They outgrew that space at about 5 weeks old. They are up to needing about 8 sq ft per chick.

OK! We put the hardware cloth around the outside of the coop this evening. I'm going to section off the inside tomorrow into 3 areas: adults, mean chick, 8 normal chicks. Wish us luck!

Tell me where you got them, to make sure I don't buy from them lineage. So far my RIRs are nice and friendly, they are 17 month olds, my mean ones are the Wyandottes.

My RIR are nice too, some birds seem to have more energy to spare. The only time I had troubles with chicks feather picking was because I didn't move them out to the shed soon enough. They get bored pretty quickly when young and should go outside during the day by 2 weeks of age if possible. Mine stopped feather picking after being moved out to the big shed. I would get them moved asap, and give them plenty of range and room.

It's been years since I had production reds; I'd guess that they came from MMCM or Townline, but it's been so long ago, the breeding lines now may be totally different. On the other hand, my BLR Wyandottes from MMcM have been absolutely wonderful! Mary
