Chick raising days are upon us! Show me those cute little fluff balls!

Here are my sweeties that hatched December 1...my first ever chicks. :) They hatched naturally under my broody Australorp hen. She hatched 7 out of 11 eggs and there were 6 pullets. :) It has been the best experience for me and my 12 year old son to watch these babies grow. Now we are waiting on the first egg! :)

My chicks hatched from an Australorp too!

I'm addicted... I'm loving chicken raising so far!

We got 3 Barred Rocks, 3 Ameraucanas, and 2 Buff Orpingtons, all pullets, hopefully anyways. Not ready for a roo just yet.
So cuuute! I have a Barred and an Ameri....they are both such sweet hens....the Barred is kind of the dummy, lol and the Ameri is SUPER curious about everything. Chickens are addicting, I want more!

Buff Orpington hens are also really great mothers. I have 3 BO hens and they have all been a mama at least once. One of my BO hens has been a mom two summers in a row now. Im getting some Australorps in the Spring, and im hoping mine turn out to be good moms too! I love getting broody hens

Thankfully now I have the space to build a brooder in my barn just for my hens. With my luck all 3 of my BO's will want to brood this year!

On the 17th I bought my 6 new chicks.

2 Cochins
2 Buff Orpingtons
2 Red Sex Links.

Kinda hoping for one roo, maybe, not sure. I had one before and he kept them all in line until that flock was murdered.

Today they were about two weeks, so I took them outside to enjoy the 60 degree weather, had them in a little cage with the bottom out so they could peck the grass and dirt. My two hens came up pretty curious of the fuzz balls. One high tailed it out of there, and the other stayed around, eating the grass by the cage. I decided to let them out of the cage, but be ready to intervene. When I lifted it up, all of them ran to Pebbles (my one hen), she took it very well. Only pecked one once when she got a little nosey. But over all she let them peck her toes and beak. I have a feeling she will be momma hen to them.

Here are some of ours...

Lets see if I can get all this right the first time :)

4 Barnevelders, 3 Ameraucana, 2 Showgirls, 5 Silkies, 2 Buff Orpintons and 1 black Jersey Giant. whew! We'll have to get rid of any Roo's as we aren't allowed them in our zoning, so we will end up with less in the end.
