Chick Seizure, 11 day old cochin

Quote:
Thank you for your condolences! This is a possibility. I keep replaying it in my mind to see if there is something I could have missed. Before her first seizure, one of the other chicks jumped on her. I didn't really think too much of it since they all love to jump on one another, but maybe it was just enough to knock her 'off' if she had a problem anyhow and it triggered the seizures. I am not sure what the scratching was about... if she had pressure in her head perhaps she would do that? It's a lot of speculation. We are still very sad about it but we understand that the reality of chicks is that some of them can't make it to adulthood.

I'm so sorry, I know little Loaf will be missed

There is always that nagging feeling that we could have done more--but don't let it eat you up. Quite frankly I don't know if there's anything else you could have done, if that's any consolation. You took her into supportive care and made sure she was comfortable during her seizures and last hours. It does sound like an injury to the head or built up pressure. If this was the case, there was nothing to do, especially on a chick so tiny.

I'm sorry if I sound critical. I did have a chicken die where I could have most certainly saved her if I had known more (crop problems). I'll always be haunted by it, but I have lots of other chickens to take care of now, and I know if the same thing happens to one of them, I'll be ready this time.

Best of luck with the rest of your chicks

I am having the same problem with one of my chicks. They are vaccinated and from a hatchery...this seems to be the only one doing this.

My homeschooled kids are so worried!

So glad to find this post because I have a chick doing the exact same thing. When she is having an episode, I feel so sorry for her than I am contemplating letting my husband put her out of her misery. Then she gets better, eats and seems ok until another episode. She has a sore behind her eye and the eye is swollen.
