What is going on with my 5 week old American bresse back? I haven’t seen any pecking and I’ve dusted all of them with diameteous dust.

It looks like she is being feather picked by others. Can you see her preen gland? Is there any swelling or irritation? Can you put something on the red area to make it less obvious? Blue food coloring, gentian violet, iodine, or a bad tasting ointment such as Vicks might help. Be sure to look them over for any lice or mights. DE can be very irritating to eyes and lungs of chicks.

When I use DE, I only put a little in their dustbath and the floor of their coop. I have never applied it directly on the chickens. Could the direct application have caused this?

No, I don’t think so. Is the chick pecking herself? The preen gland is located near the tail, so check it to see if it is swollen.

You may not notice that she is being pecked, but she may be. Are all chicks the same age?

Looks like they are in a plastic tub? How big is it and how many are in there? Overcrowding and not enough space almost always results in someone getting plucked.
