I made a post earlier about this, but I figured I have a different question and needed a more specific thread. I hatched a chick out yesterday, she wasn't moving around very well (not as well as all her other siblings) after moving them all to the brooder I went to check on them and noticed she had an eye deformity. when I looked closer both eyes seemed to be deformed, but one is way worse.
At first she couldn't really close either of the eyes but over night she managed to get one eye closed. But the other is still stuck open. both eyes have the same shape on the back half of the eyelids, but the left eyes nictitating membrane seems to be stuck half closed it wont move in either direction making it hard for her to actually close her regular eyelids at all.
This morning her left eye had a bunch of white stuff in it that I managed to get out, but a few hours later there was white stuff again but I am having trouble getting it out this time. She is still in the incubator away from her siblings so they don't pick on her eye. she seems to move around a lot. and is hell bent on trying to jump out of the incubator every time I open it. I have been putting veterisyn eye gel in her eyes to see if that helps, and I am planning on getting some terramycin and some saline to treat her with as well.
what I am wondering, if she is never able to close that eyelid, is there something I can do to make that eye more comfortable? would it be better to euthanize her?
she also has curled toes that I am treating her for with band aids and am going to get some b2 to treat her.
anyone have any advice or knowledge on how to care for a chicken that cant close her eyelid?
Here is what her eye looked like yesterday (note the kind of pinched shut part on the back half of the eye, both eyes have that, but only this one has the issue with the nictitating membrane.
ps. the eye looks pretty normal under their. the black part is actually her eye. and from the red like over towards her beak is the nictitating membrane.
