My three week old polish has a funky looking toenail/appendage on one of his toes. He doesn't seem bothered by it while walking. What is this? Just a deformed toenail or something else? Do I need to do something to it? I am really upset with the health of the chicks that were ordered from Ideal Hatchery. Out of sixteen, one died suddenly at one week, another is failing to thrive (one half the size of others, sits all the time), one has scissor beak and now this. They all seem to be genetic/nutritional issues. I wrote an email to Ideal expressing concern and they did not respond. It's 25% of my order... and these are for pets, of course I will take care of them and fix what can be fixed unless it's a 'quality of life' matter.
Any advice appreciated.

I'm not close to a "chicken doctor" and have no idea what (diseases) it could be, but I had a pekinxsilkie who grew a curly toenail although the other way around. She was turned out to be 100% fine.

Keep a watch incase I'm wrong though!

Thanks, I am going to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't spread up her leg. When she's a bit older I might try and trim it - I can't tell if it's the actual toe or toenail... she's pretty tiny!

Yeah, just keep an eye on it. If it bothers her, or gets longer you'll have to deal with it. Otherwise, it just looks like a small deformity or something happened while hatching. Make sure it's not open on the bottom. If it gets rubbed raw because it's not a toenail but a twisted toe it could get infected or bumble foot often.

Thanks! I'll watch out for her. I'd hate to have it develop into something worse.
