Chick Treats?

I agree---it's so hard to know what is right. Today two of my friends were shocked we have already fed treats to our 3 week olds. They said nothing is needed for months except chick starter. They were both very adamant. But one thing I thought of later was that both families have raised many chicks at once and they are NOT necessarily their pets. They are raised for eggs AND meat. So...I'm starting to think that is the difference in mentality. I think the chicks are bored and want to keep them busy and happy and they think that clean food and water is all you need. I guess we are both right!

That's a really good point. I want to give treats not only because I want to change their impression of me from "Oh,gawd...here comes that big monster who puts our butts under warm water and then rubs us with oil" to "Oh, goody. The big funny looking chicken that brings tasty treats is coming! We love her!"

There are people that raise their chickens on nothing but standard chicken feed and water and their chickens do absolutely fine. Mine are pets and I since I don't consider them an investment just to get eggs, I treat them.
When wondering what to do with or what to feed the young ones, just try to keep in mind what mama hen does.

As far as treats for chicks, as pointed out by FarmerDenise, do as the mother hen would do if her brood were in the yard. There will be bugs, worms, grubs, grass mud that chicks will peck and ingest. My guess is that daily moderation is good. How many ventures out would the brood get if they were out with Momma? I gave some grubs and worms to my 2 week olds and a party broke out! Pull up the water and feed while treating but return as soon as the rowdiness dies down. The brood totally enjoyed the treats. Obviously if you have treated your lawn with any lime or standard nitrogen don't get your bugs from there. I'm thinking meal worms and crickets from the pet store would also be a clean source. I would think that the earthworms would have a natural fine grit built-in. Same as a grub.
