After a rough incubation and almost no chance of surviving, and almost being thrown away, and after much handling, the water floating trick, I heard little scrapes inside the egg. I put the egg back under the hen. This afternoon the chick was found by my husband, trying to come out the larger end, not the centre like I have always seen. The chick appeared dead, did not peep or move. He pulled back a little flap and the chick gasped and started peeping. We didn't help anymore but there is a tiny bit of blood (really bad, I know). We are waiting now. We are advocates of not helping, but it appeared that he was dead or almost dead.
But anyways, does anyone know why he tried to come out the end? I am going to check on him.

Most of my chicks come out of the large end.... or towards the large end.

I know what you mean, how they come out towards the big end, but they pip at the centre and in the end you are left with 2 halves.
In this case, he tried to come right out the end. No zipping, just right out the end.

Most should pip toward the large end, that's where the air cell is.

Toward the little end and center can be indicative of a problem. Usually there AREN'T halves but 1/3 large end and 2/3 the other thinner part of the egg.

Pipping at the center can result in death by suffocation.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. I guess my 2 "halves" are not equal halves.

Anyways, this little chick was trying to come out the end, rather the side of the big end. Perhaps, since it was the air sac end, he would have been ok. But my husband thought he was dying. He seems ok now, but he seems small, likely because he is 2 days behind the others.
