Chick w/ broken leg - ideas?

If you use a barbie arm we'll need to see some pics!

If I had a Barbie laying around I'd probably do it just for kicks! As it stands I used toothpicks wrapped in vet wrap, bent it to shape, and taped it on. He's hobbling around, but I think he'll get use to it. I just feel bad isolating him, but I don't want him getting trampled and breaking the other leg.

I've used Q-tips as splints many times for small birds and chicks.
You do have the stabilize the joint above and below a fracture in order to give the break adequate stability. Don't worry too much about fusion - chicks heal so quickly, you'll only be leaving it on for a week or two. Good luck!

Just wanted to report that the little guy is doing well. He's in the hatcher right now b/c I didn't have an extra heat lamp to separate him with...I'll be moving some other babies around today to free one up for him. I have food and water in there for him. He's walking around like a champ. It took him awhile to stop freaking out about the giant thing attached to his leg, but now he's using it well. I'll snap a pic of him tonight when I get home.

i had an adult barred rock who had her leg broken in a trap.. i mean bad. i tried to splint it but that didn't work, (i did get the splint on but it was too late) she ended up short legged.. but she could run faster than most of the roosters lol. so i don't think id have culled it either. chicks can be rather robust if given the chance. but i agree to add another chick in with Skippy so he/she's not lonely.

I'll add another chick with him tonight as soon as I get him out of the hatcher...I don't need a totally healthy one in there knocking all my eggs around and pooping everywhere...lol.
