Chick was attacked by my flock...GRAPHIC PICS!!!

Here's a couple of pictures of her and her new friends. Im trying to remember how long its been; I think just a few weeks. It looks worse to us than it feels to her, Im sure. She's so happy with her new little friends, too.

Yes, the skin will grow back. Just make sure you keep it clean I would use diluted Betadine and then neosporin without pain reliever, also if you leave it uncovered, make sure the flys don't get to it, you don't want maggots in there. Just make sure you continue to keep she separated until it completely heals.

Was wondering why dawg53 wouldn't recommend bluekote? is it because it's an open wound? just wondering ......and what sweet pic!

The skin will grow to fill in but feathers most likely won't. I had this happen also. Except it wasn't due to other chickens. Mine had gotten caught on something and in puling loose pulled the skin from one side of her neck to the other. Her flesh was hanging under her beak. I couldn't stomach sewing it back so I placed it bac the best I could and the rest it didn't cover healed right up. She never grew feathers in the spot the skin grew new at but the other feathers covered it.

If I where you, I would also trim back the feathers around the wound so they don't grow into it as it heals and grows new skin and I would keep neosporin on it for at least a few days. And inside away from flies. They will eat at it and just cause more problems. I kept mine in an aquarium covered with one of those expandable screens and in a dark room. She had just enough room for food and water and herself. She wasn't up to alot of moving around anyway but I laid a brick on the screen just in case she decided to jump out. She did fine. She stayed inside till the scab was gone. I didn' want the bugs to get to her. She is doing fine and laying big beautiful eggs for me every day now. I named her Lucky Duck, because she was lucky we didn't eat her instead.

I agree with the they don't feel pain like we would. Mine was walking around outside and looking for bugs as if nothing happened to her. When her and her sister saw me knowing it was feeding time they came running. Thats when I noticed something wrong. It wasn't even the bare, raw neck that caught my attention. It was the flap of skin flapping under her beak that caught my attention. I made the mistake of covering hers with gauze after I tended to it. I was trying to hold the skin in place because I didn't have the stomach to sew it up. So I ended up spending 3 days picking out gauze a strand at a time. I would use neosporin to loosten it up then pull a strand out at a time till I got it all out. She probably would have healed faster if I hadn't used gauze. I didn't know at the time. She was a trooper though. She would just sit in my lap and let me pick away. Every now and again she would balk. I assume those where the ones that hurt when I pulled on them. She was friendly for a while after that but with freedom she is just like most of the rest. She prefers not to be touched. She will even peck me if i'm messing with one of her friends. She is the dominant hen of course.

It has isopropyl alcohol in it.... could be very painful for her. I use Blu Kote for minor scratches, small cuts like pecks on the comb, wattles etc...neosporin is best in this instance IMO.

Love those pics!!! I have 4 Wheaten Ameraucanas that look just like her! What a good girl.

Okay, I'm taking everyone's advice. I will clean it, put on the ointment, and keep her inside with me. All advice is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you all so much. I'll post her progress.

clean it with some saline dab it dry with a towel and if theres a flp there you can try gluing it with either dermabond from the pharmacy or simple superglue a bit of blukote and your good to go

She (He?) is better. Eating, drinking, playing. The neck had no skin left to flip back over...it has completely dried up and scabbed. I put a few of her brooder buddies in with her. I have a good feeling she will have a full recovery.

I wasn't that optimistic when I found her...it scared me! I'll post progress pics.

Thank you!
