My husband had some wood in the chicken coop and it blew over onto a month old chick. I think it's leg is broken. I have it wrapped up in a towel in my lap. It's not moving, I think he could be in shock. It still chirps but mostly sits with it's eyes closed. When resting, it won't lie on the right side of is body at all. he won't stand or walk, even one legged. Wings are not broken. I know I need to keep it warm but what else can or should I do?

I'll be honest--sounds like it may have some internal injuries. I would splint its leg with tape and a popsicle stick but if it won't even walk on the other one, it may need to be put down. Sorry, but that's my advice. Once they give up the will to live it's very hard to re-awaken that will. Good luck and keep us updated.

give him time.... a dog got one of my chicks. had to wash dirt from its eye. it kept it's eyes closed for like a day and would not move and when it started, it fell forward, like it's head was too heavy. she pulled through though. this chick was only days old too. keep him quiet and don't mess with him too much, let him feel comforted by your warm hands and the towel though. good luck

I moved him to the crate where he was raised before going into the coop. He's bundled up in the towel semi close to a light (warmth). He's eating. But he won't stand up on anything. He can get his legs under but won't attempt to stand. I can't tell what's broken or not. I'm going to leave him as is for now and readjust as more info comes in. Here's a pic of how he prefers to lay. He won't stay on the right side of his body.

I think it's the upper leg or joint that's injured. My husband said the 2x4 was laying 2" side down across his lower leg so his feet were sticking out on one side while the joint was under the wood. He still may have to be put down, but as long as he's eating, I'll be sure there's no hope of him walking before I do that.

I didn't see the pic...probably a prob with my computer, but I would just make sure he is laying on his chest if at all possible. move the food/water within easy reach and if you feel he could make it, just continue as you are. Maybe put him in a little box near the light to keep him on his chest? I had a chick recently with splayed legs and someone suggested cutting a cereal box bottom off so that it was about the level of the chick's head and it will support them from the sides...let us know!

NOW my computer loads the pic, lol...poor thing...just try to keep him on his chest...

sorry... i was slow with the picture.

I'll go move him onto his chest. Thanks!

awww, the pict is heartbreaking!!
How is he doing on his chest? does he seem comfortable? eating is one good sign, but laying like that on his side, that bothers me.

We have him in a little box so he's propped up on his chest. I'm beginning to think it's not a leg but his hip(s). Neither leg is working to hold him up. He doesn't bend them at all.

I think I need to look into how to humanely put him down quickly.

I'll give him a day since he's so perky and eating drinking..etc.. I hate to give up on him yet.

I have a hen that sprained her ankle and it took some time to heal but as long as I set her by her food, then her water everyday to eat and drink as much as possible she was fine. At first she wouldn't move but as I helped her she started to limp around all the time and now she is completely better
