Seems like I have great luck with chicks,
Lyanna is a chick, we’ve had her 4/5 days, so she’s at most a week old. She’s 38 grams (gaining a lot every day, this is normal for her), and she is a barred rock. Yesterday night (the 11th) I took her and the other two new chicks aside to make sure they got some solo time eating, and I noticed her holding her left foot. It was slightly above the ground, curled. But, she was on a tote without bedding for the moment, and it seemed she would stsnd on it on the table. Plus, she roosted on my fingers and walked normally in my lap, so I wasn’t too worried. By roost, I mean literally, holding on with her lil toes curled, sat down, sleeping.
in retrospect, I think she has always walked.. oddly. maybe not always, but a day or so after we got her I wound think to myself ’Is she limping?”, pull her out, and she would walk normally. Still ,with her actually roosting on their dowel rod (thin, only an inch off the bedding), she seemed fine. That is, until today. She doesn’t bear weight on it at all. Her “knee” joint is incredibly swollen and she doesn’t move her toes ar all. I tried moving them on my own, no resistance. i have dislocations almost daily, so I like to think I’m versed in them. I felt the joint, and though it was hard to feel it, I felt her bones and they didn’t seem out of line? Her leg isn’t angled in either direction improperly. her leg itself isn’t discolored, and though the joint appears more red, I think it’s just because it’s enlarged. It’s the same shade as the other leg. She’s definitely mobile, having watched her go in and out of their pvc pipe, eat, etc. shes strong. She has always been a very mellow, docile chick, so I can’t say her activity level has changed because she never had one, lol. I did notice she’s spending more time waaaay inside the pvc pipe. Do you think the warmth soothes the joints.
none of the other chicks seem to be having issues, bearing in mind that we only have her as our one barred rock. Nobody picks on each other, nor tramples each other. I have no idea what could have happened. She has jumped out of my lap before, but I can’t recall a time she ever landed on the floor. I’ve always caught her, or she’s landed onto the pillow. adittionwlly, with me having seen this behavior very early on, im not sure if trauma could have caused this. Now, with her joint being swollen, I wonder if something has worsened symptoms? She’s eating medicated chick pro, manna pro, drinking normally, right now I have mixed in Sav-a-chick electrolytes in. Her poops are normal.
so far I haven’t done, well, anything. I didn’t check on the chicks until late tonight, which I’m beating myself up over. Still, I don’t know what I can do. I don’t know if chickens , much less chicks, can take any kind of inflammation medicine. I don’t know if I’m just daft and totally missing a broken joint, etc.. It moves normally without clicking. Her joints seem aligned, there doesn’t seem to be an extreme amount of pain when I move her leg, it’s normal in coloration, is not hot, and the bones themselves feel normal. She’s clearly moving, somehow, I haven’t gotten to sit and watch her yet. She seems to do what other impaired birds do- balance on a wing. she’s in a tote with shaved bedding , can’t recall what kind of wood, I know it’s safe.
as much as I’d love to offer any treatment available, I can’t. I can only treat her at home to thr best of my abilities. I included some (poor quality, I was rushing) pictures. Because I couldn’t wait, I don’t have a picture of her standing upright.
