Hi all,

I have a chick who has trouble standing up. He only will put pressure on his right leg, and every time he tries to stand up, he will fall over. I think his left leg is broken, so can anyone tell me how to fix a chicks broken leg? Your help is much appreciated!

No, his legs are not spraddled, but it looks like his toes are curled.

Hi all,

Is the injured leg out-of-shape or out-of-line, so it must be reset to match the other leg or is it in-line but chick just not using it?

If it is in line or appears in shape, then I would suggest you treat for "splay-leg". Some chicks' will have legs too weak to properly stand so they sort of say out sideways so it appears the chick is sitting on its rump. You can give it the support it needs with a itty bitty hobble that you create with a little tiny bracelet around the good leg that then has a tie over to the splaying-out leg & encircles that little ankle about halfway up to the elbow on each little leg. Easy the make out of a 1/4 wide piece of tape. Keeps the legs from splaying apart until the chick's little leg muscles strengthen in a week to 2 weeks. You can watch a I-tube on applying the little hobble that keeps the legs from splaying out.
If the leg appears broken, either go to the vet or again, you can use a FLAT toothpick cut to size & gently traction on either side of where it's broken to gently realign the bone & then tape the flat tooth pick along the leg so it goes to the foot & up to the elbow & gently tape it to the leg. Be sure you don't wrap the tape too tight to cut off circulation. It should be able to still get around. In 2-3 weeks, take it off if it hasn't come off. If it comes off before 2 weeks & the chick is having trouble, reapply it. U-tube it.

Toes curled-up on the injured leg? That sounds like birth defect - like clubfoot. Nerve damage or birth defect...
Vet or...
Try this:
1. House by self for medicating in its h20:
1. Sugared electrolyte soln. added to its water.
2. Shave a bit of a human Calcium tablet into its water. Not a whole or even half a tablet... a little bit of shaved calcium tablet powdered into its h20.
Your chick may be dehydrated & have low Calcium with cramped little feet!
There are some liquid vitamins you can find at most Feedstores. If they have Calcium in them, you're in luck! Use them as drops into the chick's little water supply as per instructions on container.A day or two should do it. Beyond this...vet. you may have to teaspoon water & feed it with food & water multiple times a day since it can't get around.
Good luck...

Hi all,

The chick that was having problems is know doing fine. She is acting just like any other chick should, and through some physical therapy, she has learned to walk. :wee We have named her Blannie. THANK YOU for all your help, for Blannie would die without it.
