I have a chick (4 days old) that seems to walk on it’s hocks frequently, flaps out its wings when it walks, and generally seems a little off. It’s smaller and seems to struggle with balance?

When it hatched, it got a small umbilical hernia which seemed to reabsorb just fine- but I can still feel a bit of whatever dried up.

This batch of chicks was also in a power outage for 7 hours, so that might’ve affected it.

Is there a way to fix this? What is it, and how? If not, will the chick live to be okay? It doesn’t seem to be suffering, but I don’t want it to in the future.

What are you feeding? Do you have some sav-a-chik or nutri drench on hand? It might be a vitamin deficiency but it isn’t something I’ve personally dealt with so I can’t be sure.

We have some of the water electrolytes, and we currently have them on “country feed duck & all flock starter”

i’ll get their water ready with the electrolytes right now, thanks!

You’ll want fresh water as well. Maybe try a mash with egg yolk and starter crumble for that one chick. I think you need more experienced help than I can give though and I’m trying to remember who has helped me in the past with chick issues. I’ll tag someone else and if they can’t help they will know who can
@Eggcessive?

ah, thank you! will do :)

I would get some human vitamin B complex and crush a tablet inna teaspoonful of water in addition to the electrolytes. Give 1/4 of that daily for riboflavin. I thought I had posted this yesterday, sorry.

Hiya, I just had a chick with a similar issue. Mine had struggle standing, standing basically pushed itself on its side and had its neck to one side. I immediately started giving it egg yolk with electrolyte water and Vitamin E. Nutrient supplements are good for a boost as well and with constant available heat. I also put the chick in a loose sock in a container with ladding to help it lie straight through the night. Within the next day or 2 the chick was walking and not falling. Now she is running along and having very minor balance issues (shes still adjusting). I would suggest feeding her by hand for a week or so just incase to ensure the chick is developing well and catching up with it's friends. Such issues usually occur with early hatching (with my chick two). Not all chicks will recover so keep a close eye on her. Let us know she gets on, good luck! :)
