Chick with sour crop and cocci

Hi all

I’ve got 4 , 8 week old silkie chicks. Touch wood all had been healthy 5 days ago I let them out in the “big” run and free range supervised. 3 days ago I noticed one was puffed up and bit lethargic by the morning she was puffed up refusing to eat, vets gave me antibiotics. However the next day another one seemed unwell although not as bad but they started to poo wjth blood I’ve had it tested it’s got high cocci and my vet has given me medicine to put in the water.

The problem is the little one who was really poorly won’t touch the water, I tried to syringe in some of the medicated water and it came straight back up. I’m absolutely petrified of her aspirating so I’ve left her alone.

I don’t know what to do for the best if she won’t drink I can’t cure the coccidiosis, I don’t know if she’s got the sour crop because of the coccidiosis but her crop is so big now there is liquid coming out.

I’ve given her a tiny bit of liquid pariffin but I really don’t think she’s going to survive. Is there anything else I should be doing and in her case what’s more important treating the cocci or the sour crop? Should o stop the antibiotics too as I’m worried this can be making the sour crop worse ?

You should be able to give the coccidiosis treatment undiluted as a drench, which would get a decent dose into her in just a tiny amount of fluid. How much you give will depend on the strength of the medicine and how much she weighs.

Corid deplates nutrients which does not combine well with a chicken that already isn't doing well from another issue. I would continue the corid treatment and for the chick that isn't doing too well, give a little poultry cell or nutridrench as a boost.
