Chick with wonky toes?

I've put a shoe on one of her feet too see if it will do anything, how long do I leave the shoe on?

I took it off (been 24hr) and it seems to be working. Her toes are still rolled inward abit but seem better than before shes still wobbly on her legs though.

I had funky chick toes and high toe walking at about 2 weeks of age...it turned out to be a Vitamin B deficiency.

I put them on Chick Saver with a loading dose the first couple of days (by mistake, but actually was a good thing, I had made it 1 1/2 strength), then I backed off and made it regular strength (my Vet Tech daughter said I stumbled onto loading then maintenance doses).

It improved in about 2 days and cleared in a week.

If that doesn't help, then it is likely something genetic. I have had inbred rare types with feet and leg problems. I did not have good luck with them, that line resulted in poor hatches with bad feet. As they grew, it simply got worse, and I ended up culling out of pity for the poor animals....but glad to hear others had chickens that survived and lived to old age.

Mineral oil or baby oil will get the tape shoe off easily. I always make mine out of the sticky part of a cut up bandaid. I do not like to use a color that stands out. After doing this a few times, I found that standing the chick on a flat surface, arranging the toes, and then placing the top of the shoe on first was easier than trying to get the bottom of the foot taped before the top. I used to have an awkward struggle trying to keep the little toes just so and this helped to get it right. Good luck with this. It sounds like the baby may need a vitamin supplement for a while.

If it seems to have worked, I'd put it back on and just change it out every couple of days until the chick is bigger.

I've done a fair bit of looking about these toes that bend sideways like that, because I'm pretty sure the rooster I had before was inbred way too far (I didn't know when I got him). They start bending sideways after a week or two, so it's not an incubation problem (that's evident at hatch).

I have five pullets I've saved from his last hatch and moved him on. I did find that they suspect it can also be a B vitamin issue, so I've gotten some Brewer's Yeast to add to the feed.
