Help! First time chicken Mom.

All my chicks had silicon ID bands on. I removed all of them but apparently this girl had two and one of them is above her hock ( horse person here...) and it started to grow in! Wasn't swollen 3 hours ago but I noticed lameness snd swelling and that's when I noticed the band. I can take her to the vet tomorrow if I need to

She is about 3 week old white rock.

This needs to be removed ASAP before it cuts off the circulation and kills the leg. This may need to be surgically removed. You can try to get under it but I think you risk cutting into the leg here.

I would see a vet as quickly as you can. Hope everything goes well for you and your little one!

Double check the other chicks for wayward bands.
I checked everyone for bands and no one else has any!

I did get the band off, luckily I have Hemostats and suture scissors at home ( cat dog vet tech) and was able to cut the band off !

Anything I should put on the wound until I can get her to the vet? I could take her to the emergency vet but they said there is a 4 hour wait since she isn't emergent.

Cold compress the area?

I feel like a HORRIBLE chicken Momma

Oh good! As long as it's completely off the swelling should go down. I would thoroughly clean the area, then apply Neosporin (no pain killer). You can do compresses beforehand if you like. She should heal up fine.

And don't beat yourself up! Chicks grow very quickly. People often don't put the bands on until they're older because of this.

Its completely off. I had to turn myself into "work mode" and get the job done. She was NOT HAPPY and let me know.

I will try not to beat myself up. I cant believe I missed a band but she apparently had 2 on and I didn't think to look for a second one!

Looking better this morning! She is not limping! Cleaned off the shavings dust with saline and put a little more neospořin on it! Calling the chick vet when they open to make sure there is nothing else they recommend!

Thanks for the help!
