I've had my "girls" about a month now...and am having so much fun! I'm posting my feathers and tails on FB...but I thought I would share a little of my adventure here too. The Girls are about 4 weeks old..and pretty close to have their feathers. I have purchased a "simple to assemble" coop..that a friend has volunteered to help me put together. But Our schedules haven't matched up...and while the instructions say the only tool you need is a screwdriver - no where does it mention how much wine you need.
I can't build much of anything...but with duct tape, a staple gun and some yarn, I am quite dangerous. Thus...last weekend, I put together a makeshift coop so the girls could be out during the day. It's made from an old Xpen for puppies, a dog crate, some garden stakes (duct taped together to make an arch) and some bird netting used to keep birds out of my blue berries. The girls love their time outside..but when it gets dark - Last Wednesday nights event:
"Oh...High drama in the chicken pen tonight. Church choir ran late..then I got on the phone with a friend and it was 8:40 before I got home to check on the girls. getting darker...the toads are singing in the the pond..and on the other end of the yard...the girls are having a fit...chirping and chattering. They have never been out in the dark before.... I got out to check on them. Geneva...my ...quiet brave little soul was on the PVC pipe I put in this morning to help them learn to roost. the other 3 were all gathered at the end of the coop that is nearest the house..having a fit! I don't think they were cold..they were just scared! I got everyone gathered up (with no problem I might add ..) and transferred to the brooder box in the garage...where they demanded meal worms and all nested down immediately...they are exhausted."
Thursday:
Today's Chicken drama. We started off the morning, moving everyone outside..and I needed to turn the compost pile. This resulted in the discovery of a bunch of worms. So...I gather a handful and toss into the coop...and excitement and chaos reign as each chick grabs a worm half their size and runs around flapping wings and chirping..and therefore dropping worm...and ...well..you can imagine. I ...really should turn on the video cam for these events. Later I am at the office..on phone..where I've been glued all week..and all of a sudden I hear rain pounding on the roof..."Aaack..Chicks are outside". So I fly out of office, short cut my way all the way home...and dash out to find the 4 girls in the doorway of the dog crate...little heads peeking out in the rain. Dry as a bone...not in the least upset or showing any appearance of cold, fear etc. I on the other hand..had almost wrecked my car and/or got a ticket dashing home to check on them, while preparing myself for a disaster requiring a chicken funeral et al. Girls gathered up and put in the brooder...and demanding their treat of meal worms. Meal worms are the cure all for chickens...
Needless to say...my FB following has increased two fold since I started telling my tales. they said this was for rambling...
