So my hen has had a runny nose just on the left side for a little less than a month. Today I went to open the coop and she was off the perch with her eye like this. (Left side too) She is acting well but isn’t eating as much as usually. I imagine it hurts! We have a new rooster who is kinda nasty and ducks so I don’t know if she got bit by a duck bad or if it’s from an internal issue... I’ve kept her separated all day and not much has changed. It does look like some of the swelling in the center has gone down. The eye doesn’t look as far out and looks more like a crater now. These are the best pictures I could get. She didn’t like me on her blind side understandably. Any knowledge or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

It looks like she may have a respiratory disease, such as MG. Is there any bad odor from her face? Certain antibiotics, such as Tylosin, Doxycycline, Oxytetracycline, or Denagard which may be obtained from a vet or sometimes found online for pigeons can treat symptoms of MG. Since it is a chronic disease, it can come back, but testing is the best way to know for sure what this is. It is spread by carriers. How long have you had the new rooster or ducks? The usual incubation time is 6-10 days after exposure for symptoms to show. Here is where you can find Tylosin:

Crap. I was praying it was just a bad peck for something. It does smell :( the rooster was the last one we got which was 2 months ago. No one else is showing symptoms and the place we got him from only had 12 chickens raised together from chicks. We did get some chicks from a local tractor supply... that was about a month ago. They all seem very healthy... I’ll try the meds and keep an eye on the rest. Thank you so much for your help!

The smell could be coryza, but it also could be E.coli or another bacteria if something got into the eye and caused infection. I would flush the eye with saline eye wash, and try to clean out or squeeze out any pus. Getting pus out might help it to smell better and give antibiotic ointment or antibiotics orally, a better chance of working. If a vet is possible, that might be best. Here is a graphic video on getting pus from the eye:

so her eye is definitely less swollen than the first day. Still watering and bubbly. The tylosin comes tomorrow and I was wondering if you knew what kind of dosage it is for a chicken? Also it says to put it in the pigeons water but I don’t know if that’s also what I would do for a chicken. Thank you!

Tylosin dosage is 1 tsp per gallon of water or 1/4 tsp per quart waterer. Give it as her only source of water for 3-5 days. Change the water on day 3. Always add water to the powder or it won’t mix properly. Make sure that she drinks the water.
