Hello, I’m requesting some help for my hen that injured her toenail today. I think she got it stuck on a bite of wire while jumping off the roof of the chicken coop. I think the bleeding has stopped but is there anything I should put on her would to help her?

Hi! I just went through this with one of mine. First, I got the bleeding stopped by globbing on styptic powder. Once I could see it scabbing up (hours later), I gently cleaned her up in a warm foot bath. You probably won't need to do this if you have a clean-footed bird, but mine was feather-footed and covered in blood. After that, I dried her off and sprayed some Veterycin on the area. I rechecked/cleaned/sprayed daily for a few days, keeping an eye out for any swelling or redness. She was looking pretty good around the 3-day mark. There's still a huge scab that's been slow to come off, but I'm just leaving it. It will fall off on its own time.

It’s good to hear that it cleared up for your hen! Yes, mine is a blue laced Wyandotte with pretty clean feet, besides having dirt on it. Do u think I should wrap her toe in anything to prevent her from picking on it after putting medicine?

I was wondering the same thing, but mine seemed to leave it be. So as long as there's not a giant red visible sore for other chickens to target, she should be good? Might be worth monitoring for a few, just to make sure.

On closer inspection, it seems some of her toenail has come off.

Did anyone use neosporin for this type of wound before? I heard it’s usually used on the foot, but I have it with me right now so wondering if it’s good on the toes

Alright, thank you, everyone. I got her toe to stop bleeding. I managed to get some styptic powder on her, but she did pull off the bandage that I put on her foot. On the bright side, she is eating extremely well.
