Well here is a video that started this thread.......

Does any one have a door like this?
I will help perfect this. But it might take some time.
What do you think of this system? Would anyone like to help make this door happen or is this idea dead??
Please post your coments so this thread can die or move forward.
Thanks to every one that posts in this thead to see if this is possible

Cute idea!

Some problems I could see with it:

  • If it is activated by the weight of the number of chickens you have, it wouldn't take much to affect its operation. A chicken dies? Need to adjust it. A chicken decides to sleep somewhere other than the roost? The door doesn't close. Someone goes broody? Oops, not enough weight to close the door.
  • Predators. Is it predator proof? It seems to go up and down pretty darn fast, but I didn't see anything keeping it closed other than the weight of the birds, so a good tug on it by a something might be able to pull it open in the middle of the night.

Thank-you for posting in this thread. I have 50 chickens and was hoping on making the door going down with about 40 or 45 of them. I'm going to work on this in since the 25 chickens are 9 weeks old and the others are 3 weeks. I would like to thank everyone that posts comments in this thread yes everyone. Yes I do need constructive criticism and thanks again...

I like this locking system. What do you gus and gals think?

Wow, I am super impressed.

Did you say "Shoo Goo?" Don't you love that stuff? I bought a tube of it a year or so ago and have fixed about a dozen pairs of shoes with it - really great adhesive!

Question. In the last few seconds of the video I could see you were using the "trigger" on the drill both for controlling the up and the down. What tells it to go in forward and reverse?

I like your anti-raccoon mechanism. Simple, yet I wouldn't have come up with it in a million years.

I think your idea of having it close when 40-45 are on the roost might work. What happens though if some of the stragglers are not even in the coop by the time the 45th bird lands on the roost - are they then locked out for the night? Also, is adjusting it when you up or downsize your flock fairly straightforward?

I also liked it when I saw it a while back. When I decided to build one, I couldn't find the video again. I made mine from what I could remember from it. It turned out great and still working great. I have it hooked up to an 'Add-a-motor'... works like a charm.

So this is what I have built...

So I have 5 gallon buckets on both ends with bricks for counter weights and it works... The KISS method and it works for me just played with the counter weight...Please post your comments . And thanks for your input!!!!
