Not an expert or knowledgeable on state/county laws but a well driller once told me 10' of good soil can clean water for a well. Obviously farther away is better but I would think soil conditions would be THE most important factor.

The thing about X feet of soil as 'filter' is that water does not always percolate thru the soil. Sometimes it bypasses it, overland or thru mole tunnels or whatever, to well casing and then along outside of well casing to any breaks or flaws that may exist.

Personally I don't think it's a big thing to worry about if you have a sensible setup and few chickens and a good well; but, just outlining the issues involved.
