Hello,
So I have an adult hen who is about 5 years old. Recently she has started making a noise while breathing. Its not always noticeable but if you listen outsider her coop at night you can tell she's in as you can hear her breath. Its not raspy but more a low pitched noise. I have recently wormed them all. She doesn't have any other symptoms like gaping, sneezing etc.
I think giving her some antibiotics would be my next step.
My question is what antibiotic would people recommend and an idea of dosage.
Thank you for any help
Nina

A video of the sound can be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo with a link posted here. As long as she isn’t showing other symptoms of a respiratory disease (eye bubbles/foam, swollen face or eyelid, drainage from nostrils, sneeze or cough,) I would not use antibiotics. They can be used to treat reproductive infections to extend life. Antibiotics are different for respiratory diseases versus reproductive infections. Does she have any signs of weight loss, enlargement of her lower belly under her vent, or unusual droppings? Does she lay eggs anymore? Have you wormed her recently?

She now has one side of her face swollen. They have been wormed about a month ago. Her poop is fine and she is still laying.

Just to update.
Treated her with Tylan 200. Would have liked to use Tylan 50 but 200 is all we had. Treated for 3 days injection into the breast muscle and shes much much better. :)

Thank you for the update, and glad that she has improved with the Tylan. Just in case you have to treat any in the future with Tylan, both 50 and 200 can be given orally after removing the needle.
Hi! I’m considering treating one of my chickens with antibiotics. She sustained a pretty deep wound to her head from the other chickens pecking at her. I’ve been using a topical anti microbial. She seemed ok but now is acting more tired. Still eating and drinking.
I’m curious about your statement that Tylan 50 can be given orally… do you have instructions on that?

Welcome to BYC.
You would be better off using Amoxicillin sold as a fish antibiotic. Dosage is one 250mg capsule twice a day for 5 days. Here's where you can buy it:

I would also like to know how much to give for the future so I can dose 1 chicken instead of water method for everyone.
