So I got an adult hen from someone who had lost her eye in a fight well before I acquired her. I was told she was fine and didn't have any issues missing an eye. She's grown on me and I'm quite fond of her.

Recently her eye (or rather eye socket) blew up like triple the size. The previous owner advised I give Tylan 50 orally for antibiotics for her eye. This is the 3rd day. My boyfriend gave the antibiotic orally and were pretty sure she aspirated it.

She is gasping for air, making gurgling noises, and shaking her head and some of it appears to be coming out.

What can we do for her? Thinking I'll try and take her to an avian veterinarian in the morning.

She's settled down and is able to breathe better now but sounds wheezy. Is there any hope for her?

I did crop surgery on a bantam pullet earlier this year and she aspirated some of the liquid from her crop contents(essentially vomit), so infinitely worse than aspirating antibiotics. Anyway, despite the crop surgery being a success, she was wheezing and gurgling and I was sure she would get pneumonia and die, but 4 days later without any antibiotics, her lungs cleared and she was breathing normally again and two weeks after surgery she was back to laying eggs..... so I would say your girl probably has a good chance of survival. Don't handle her too much as that will put a strain on her lungs and keep your fingers crossed.

Just for information, you need to be angling the syringe into the right hand corner of the chickens mouth rather than in he centre, as that is the entrance to the trachea and nothing but air should go down there.
