Hi y'all,

My cute (cranky) Ameracauna (2 months old) was grabbed by a dog, leaving some small punctures on chest and one above wing on one side. She wasn't able to stand, and her wing was hanging limp. She had pretty bad bruising around her wing for a few days, and the punctures are starting to heal. We've had her isolated from the rest of the flock, and for the first couple of days it was all sleep - I had to force her to drink water, and she wasn't eating at all. Around day 3, she decided she was hungry, and has been eating ever since. She's also drinking of her own accord. We're on day five though of her not standing up, or even sitting up. She spends all her time laying on one side. She has movement in her bum leg, but won't support herself, and when I try to sit her up, she just shoots her legs forward and lays back down, or pitches her whole body forward and catches herself on her face. I've felt all around both the leg and the wing and can't find any fractures or anything out of place. We don't have any avian vets nearby, so bringing to a vet is not an option. Any ideas? Suggestions?

Hi,

So sorry about your pullet.

Even though you can't feel anything broken, she could have sprained her leg it or deeply bruised it. It probably is painful to her as well.

It's great she's eating and drinking!

I would give her about half of a human B-Complex daily, as well as some vitamins to help her heal. We use Poultry Cell or Nutri-Drench here.

I'm assuming the punctures weren't too deep or couldn't you tell? Usually, with bites like that, they need antibiotics. As long as she's seeming healthy, albeit her legs, I'd guess she's healing up and no infection has started.

I've been keeping an eye, and been bandaging/using Vetericyn spray. None of them really seemed deep, just skin. It was our own stupid dog, who I think was trying to play initially. Didn't follow through and didn't attack anyone else, so I don't think he meant to do any damage, luckily.
