Hi, welcome to BYC!Friday September 8th as we were preparing for Hurricane Irma to hit Tallahassee my granddaughter's dog got a hold of my girl Pearl. The 5 pound chicken was no match for a 60 pound Labrador. When my granddaughter give the command for the dog to release Pearl - thank goodness he did just as commanded.
Pearl's back was ripped open down to the fat and muscle with a lot of skin hanging over the gaping wounds. Everything, vets, Tractor Supply, etc. was closed so I quickly put Pearl in a warm bath with epsoms salt and betadine and got on this site to figure out what to do next.
I used a sharp pair of cuticle scissors to clip the loose skin that could not be saved. I them packed the other places with neosporin and with a sterile needle I stitched the other wounds. The next morning I went to Tractor Supply and purchased a bottle of injectable penicillin g along with 22 gauge needles and syringes. For the next four days I administered .50 cc if the penicillin g once a day in the Pearl's breast. I also kept the wound clean daily with saline and betadine. After cleaning the wounds with the saline and betadine I patted the area dry and applied blue-kote.
Today day is day 8 after the attack and Pearl is back to her normal self - scratching in the yard and tearing up the garden when she can.
The only problem I am having now is she has decided she likes the comfort of her basket in the house! As it starts to get dark she is at the back door pecking, flapping her wings and squawking to get in the house and refuses to go into the coop! Looks like we now have a indoor chicken. On a positive note, I read online that if you use nesting material in the box chickens will not poop in the box. So far so good, she has yet to poop in the box. I don't put her in the box until dark, I cover the box with a dark blanket, and I take her out first thing in the morning.
I hate to ramble but this site proved to be a life saver for Pearl. Pearl is eight years old and has been with us since she hatched. We are so grateful this site was available. Thank you again everyone.

Wow, you're pretty brave! Glad she seems to be doing well.
Welcome that sweet girl into the house.

I also prefer to have the B's and was surprised to find out the nutri drench doesn't contain them. Maybe that would be good if you were also treating cocci.
