Chicken attacked - possible prolapsed vent? Graphic photos

It looks very serious. I am not sure that she has a vent prolapse, but there looks to be a quite a bit of vent damage and wounds. You can treat it like a prolapse but don’t push it in. I would try to trim any feathers near the wounds. Clean the wounds with vetericyn, saline, or you cannuse a bit of chlorhexidene (Hibiclens) from the first aid aisle with a little water to disinfect it once, and then rinse it off with a gentle water sprayer. Then keep the vent clean when she poops, and always keep some Triple Antibiotic Ointment on the wounds until they start to heal. Soak her bottom if that helps to keep her clean, but make sure that she is warm enough. This may take some time to heal. Look for infection, a bad odor, or pus. If that happens, disinfect the wound again with Hibiclens and water. She might stop laying for awhile, and that would actually be helpful to allow her cloaca to rest. Keep her separated in a dog crate and away from flies. Flystrike in that area would be fatal.
Thank you, I won’t try to do anything as of yet in regards to “fixing” her vent and just do as you suggested. I have been very adamant about keeping flies nowhere near her. I killed the one that was in the shed (someone could live in it though as it’s finished) and put up fly strips Just in case.
Should I keep spraying it 3 times a day with the vetericyn or should I stop that and just make sure there is enough triple antibiotic?

@Eggcessive what do the proper healing phases look like?

I would spray the Vetericyn 2-3 times daily. When dry apply the ointment, so that it doesn’t dry out. Vent or cloacal tissue can dry out and die, and the wounds will heal faster if ointment is applied. Some use honey on vents and wounds as well. Medihoney is one I have seen recommended. But I would use what I already have.

Do you have any additional suggestions for pain management for her? I am currently doing Aspirin in her water which I am going to do one more day then switch to just regular water.
I’ve been giving her fresh fruit such as grapes and strawberries and she ate some worms the other day too, she has pecked at her food, but I’m unsure if she really ate anything.

Do you mean what do wounds look like as they heal? Here is a thread that shows the progressive healing in pictures:

I would offer scambled egg bits, watery chicken feed, tuna, or cat food, and I add a little water sprainkled for extra fluids. Water is nost important now.
Thank you so much for the link to that post, it’s what I’ve been looking for and couldn’t find! I will definitely offer some of those things, I had offered some eggs but I think I will scramble them up smaller next time. I really appreciate your help!

Indeed! Best of luck with your hen! I just dealt with a guinea hen with a skin laceration about my dog attacked her, and separately with a chicken with prolapsed vent, but I didn’t have to deal with both in the same hen! I hope she does well.

Thank you, I’m pulling for her and she seems to be in less pain as she has started to lay down some instead of just standing all the time. (Not in a bad way)
