You don’t need to use salty water....just try running warm water over the wound twice a day for 15 minutes Each time. I did this (on the advice of my wonderful chicken Vet) and I was amazed at how well my chicken healed up. I slathered her up with Silvadene ointment after the 15 minute rinse; I don’t now if Silvadene is available without a prescription. It is commonly used on burn patients....I have used it on surgical wounds as well. I remember the Dr telling me to “Put it on there like you are frosting a cake.” It is amazing! If Silvadene is not available, I think antibiotic ointment or antibiotic cream would be effective as well. Good luck!Update: She is alive and doing well. Her wound is not nearly as bad as I thought, once I could see it with all the feathers cut away, but it is still deep and looks like it could easily get infected. I've washed it with warm salty water, and I will do again this evening. We will go later to get some honey and/or some antibiotic ointment. She is eating and drinking by herself so fingers crossed she will be ok
The saline recommended in post 2 is isotonic 0.9% normal saline, and gentle to tissue for repeated use. It is better than using water. The recipe is given in post 2. But in an emergency, on intitial cleaning of a dirty wound, water from a kitchen sprayer would be okay.,You don’t need to use salty water....just try running warm water over the wound twice a day for 15 minutes Each time. She’s walking better, and the wound is beginning to close up slowly. The redness is going, and the bruising is fading. I took her out onto the balcony yesterday to get some sun and she lay sunbathing for ages.I’ve got a chicken with a similar wound and keen to find out how yours is progressing?
