They sure do, they seem to sense when the light gets just right that its time to go in. In fact when that time comes
they almost get nervious like they've got to go in. Funny how thier time clock works. Its interesting to watch.

Not unless they know it's home.
Lock them in the coop for a week or two before letting them loose in the yard/run.

For the most part that is true. Our Australorps(1 1/2 years old) head into the coop well before dusk but some of this years(day olds bought in late March) girls,namely the two Welsumers and one of the Buff Bramhas wait until the very last minute to go to bed. They can barely see the ladder to the roosts!
 
Yes they will. IF they know the house is where their supposed to sleep. If they are new you may have show them one or two nights but after that they take care of it!

And if you have a good Rooster, he will literally herd them in as it gets dark and circle around to make sure they're all in and no predators are in the area.
