Chicken behavior questions

If you want sweet, can't beet Easter Eggers. Both of mine are great. One especially will sunbathe on my lap. They come into lay later than other chickens though. Mine are laying most days - one is generally laying Lg and EL eggs and the other is still laying medium eggs, even after 2 months.

We have a Red Star - she's not especially friendly but she's not scared or flighty either. That hen lays every day, and her smallest eggs are 2 7/8 oz. Many of her eggs won't even fit in a jumbo carton.

Our Wyandotte is sweet too, but her eggs also tend to be on the small side.

Thanks all for the great info and advise.

Bawkbawkbawk, I know leghorns are supposed to be great layers, read that too, and maybe for some people they are but mine suck quite frankly. That's why I'm looking to phase them out, as I get new breeds and baby chicks, they go to the flea market. I have 12 white leghorn hens and am LUCKY to get 2 eggs a day, sometimes go several days with no eggs. Bullcrap!

cityclucks I am very interested in Black Australorps so thanks for confirming that for me.

tamvan, glad someone else understands what i'm saying about the leghorns.

I also did not do my research. When I got my original group of leghorns, 1 RIR roo and 1 BO roo, I didn't even have any chickens. A relative offered them and I said heck yeah. Teach me to grab something on a whim huh?

ddawn i too have EEs and I can't run mine down either. However, of 1 Roo and 2 hens, I'm getting 1 egg almost every day so I can live with that. I've left the eggs in the nest for 3 days now, hasn't started setting yet, hoping one of them will. As for "freezer camp"

for your Roo, too bad for him:p I can't bring myself to eat any of mine although my fiancee has suggested it several times. As fed up with my leghorns as I am I'm also an insane animal lover and can't eat anything I've taken care of.

kgeorge your post brought me to tears with laughter. Barred Rocks from the insane asylum:gig, that was hysterical!!! I think that's where my fiancee's STD OEGB came from. Every time I go into the pen to feed them he goes nuts. OK i realize he's excited it's feeding time but you don't have to go bananas. I'll walk in and turn to close the door so no one escapes (two very chicken hungry dogs out there) and he's flying all around my head and trying to grab the scoop out of my hand and all kinds of nonsense:mad: I hate that bird!!!

I'm leaning more towards to Buff Orpingtons, love the color, may even get some other colors if I come across them because my hen I got IS very sweet. Not as friendly as sit in your lap but if you can grab her she doesn't raise a fuss about you holding her. Also really liking the Black Australorps and heard they're great winter layers too. Any more advice, comments or opinions is welcome. You guys are great fun!

Yes, I agree with TamVan....I have 5 barred rocks and they are as lovable as puppies!!! The 5 brown leghorns I have are snobs, but they are just for the eggs...dont care if they love me or not!

LOL.

My Buff OP s are warming up nicely, tho, not nearly as lovable as the BR's .

I have 5 Americanas and they are gonna be skiddish snobs , but again....Wanted them for the colored eggs.

As long as I have a few chickens who are affectionate like these 5 barred rocks are ...I will be content.
