We have 4 two or three month old Red Stars. And when one is on something like a stool when one flys down from the stool, I guess they think that the chicken flying down is threatning and they both sort of fight. Nothing serious. Only last a few seconds. And then they get back to normal. About all of them do that. Is that just how they play or does this mean they are roosters if they do this? Any advice would be helpful:) Thanks

I have no idea in general, but in my experience the only ones that "fight" even in play fashion are the boys. I have a blue and splash orp that if one jumps or flaps around the other, they puff up their feathers and go at it for about 10 seconds and then they move on.

Boys are not the only ones that do that. I've seen my girls do that too often when they don't agree with the roosters.

I'd imagine it's just a pecking order issue.

Yes, it's just the pecking order. All my chickens do that. They puff up and sometimes drop kick each other. It has nothing to do with gender. Actually my hens do it more often than my sweet docile rooster.

I did say in MY EXPERIENCE - my older hens sometimes peck at the younger ones, but the question was about fighting behavior
