chicken bleeding from around the comb

Thanks. I ended up just watching. The others left her alone and the wound is now just a dried up scabby looking thing. I hope this doesn't keep happening while they grow their combs. It's a little unnerving.

The last time it snowed here, my darling children came barrelling into the Sun Porch. "Dad! Why are you sitting here with a rooster in your lap???" Hubby was holding Mr. FluffyButt in his lap while I grabbed the Desitin (diaper cream). Imagine my very tall husband sitting in a kiddie camp chair with a fat, white rooster perched uncertainly on his knee...

What happened to Fluffy was rooster rivalry. As soon as Fluffy would mount a hen, Blackie and Dirty Red were pulling him off BY THE COMB. Fluffy's comb got a small tear at the rear base and was slowly oozing dark blood down his white neck feathers. I applied the white Desitin to the wound area then wiped my hand clean on his neck. This effectively covered the blood stains and it lasted through a few rains. (Yes, they are too stupid to go in out of the rain.)

I have also used Desitin on hens' backs when the roosters injured skin because feathers were already pulled out. To reduce the hens' injuries in the futur, Fluffy kept a date with the crock pot and Blackie and Dirty Red spend their days in the Swinging Bachelor Pad next to the Hen Yard.

Hope this helps,
GG
