Chicken Breed Behaviors from Experience!

I want this thread to be an open platform for people to talk about their chickens and how their breeds are docile or otherwise.


I have had Golden-Laced Wyandottes before (they passed away) and they always were at the top of the pecking order. They weren’t very friendly to us humans even though we raised them since chicks. I think they were just assertive and more interested in scratching in the dirt.

What’s your experience with Wyandottes?

I love my Easter Eggers! They’ve always been lower in the pecking order yet friendly and snuggly. (And the blue eggs are a plus!)

Cuckoo Marans are very personable and can be very independent but curious and lay on my legs, too. We have 3 and 1 goes broody every year while the others are completely uninterested in raising a family. And their eggs are nice and dark!

Salmon Faverolles are my favorite!!! I don’t have any anymore but they were so cute and personable! We had three and 1 was at the top of the pecking order but still would snuggle us. The others were very low, but they made up for dominance is cuddles!!!

Speckled Sussex is also a great breed! We had 3 but now have 2 (predator loss) that I love! They are all a little low in the pecking order yet love hanging put with me. Be aware, people with long hair! This breed in particular loves to eat hair for some reason!

We also used to have Wellsummers. I love them! They were kinda shy, but also friendly. One was higher in the pecking order, but never bully-ish. And their eggs are beautiful and dark and speckled.

I WISH I had some Easter eggers! The beards get me everytime! They’re on my wishlist. I have cinnamon queens, a sapphire gem and a New Hampshire red. I had a rhode island blue but she recently passed.

Have to say my New Hampshire red, Ravioli, is my most friendly and outgoing chicken. She’s not afraid of much. I don have any cuddly ones lol she’s as close as it gets to cuddly.

luv easter eggers, they are so cute, but i breed GLWs and luv em! some are more friendly than others, (but then those ones are never the prettiest fer some reason) although i breed them i dont know if they r my fav breed, i realy like orrpingtons, cause th ones i have had r mostly friendly and purrty, but it all depends !

I started with one Faverolles, but now I have 5 hens and 6 roosters! I love them so much, and they do well in my area which gets really snowy and cold

Okay, the bearded breeds are always winners for me! And yet, like you, I also don’t have an absolute favorite. That’s so funny that kind ones aren’t the prettiest, but soooo tru! I’ve never had orpingtons but heard all good things about them!
