Chicken Breed Finalists for My Next Year Batch!

Since no color/variety is specified, the Ameraucana are most likely Easter Eggers. Those are my favorite. Faverolle, Australorp, Dorking, and Orpington will all be really good choices for a mellow flock. Wyandottes and Iowa Blues tend to need their elbow and need to be kept busy. Both tend to be dominant breeds, that can be problematic if they aren't properly managed.

That's what I figured, too about the Ameraucanas.

Oh, okay! How would you recommend keeping them busy and managing them?

Lots of space and free ranging. If you can't free range them, or your property doesn't really afford them much forage due to your landscaping, you are going to need a run with at least 12 to 15 sq ft per bird and you'll need lots of things in the run to break up sightlines. A pile of leaf litter, grass clippings, or just hay will keep them occupied for days. You can even make puzzle treat dispensers out of water bottles with holes poked into them and filled with grains.

Oh! Then they should be fine I think! We have a 35, 40 ft by like 70 ft in just one yard. We also have a back yard about a little bigger then that they'd be able to get to in the spring. I'm going to be tearing down a fence and making a small fence bigger in the spring before I get the little peeps! Thank you so much! I might make those puzzle treat dispensers anyway though now that you mention it. Sounds like fun for everyone! ;)
