Chicken Breed Focus - Buckeye

I love my Buckeyes! If I could only keep one breed it would be Buckeyes. Fearless yet friendly, excellent foragers, energetic and intelligent. Did I mention fearless? :) I love their large size, beautiful shiny deep red color and excellent disposition.

I've just begun breeding this year. My goal is to help sustain the breed. And it's only natural for an Ohio woman to continue to breed these wonderful birds!

Neat. I'll get one or two then (probably 3 since that's the minimum, but whatever at that point) next spring. I do like the coloring and the pea combs do better here than singles
You'll love them! As chicks, they aren't afraid of you. When I go to the grow out coop, the Buckeye chicks are always the first to run up to me. They love to see if I have any good food for them. They are great with Easter Eggers too. They have very similar dispositions and both are excellent foragers.

I cannot vouch for the EE, but I agree about the statement about the Buckeyes. I have grown to love them even thought they should not do the best where I am. My Buckeye cockerel will always come up to me for treats and when I show him my empty hands he walks away. He will also investigate anything that comes into the run including me, when I let the flock out in the morning he will run up to me looking all intimidating and stuff and then soon realize I am not a threat and runs off to go mate with his lovers.
