Chicken Breed Focus - Dominique

I have 3 of these. They're a week old. We got them just for eggs and out of 17 total chicks, one of these dominiques has worked her way up to strictly being a pet. I call her princess and all she wants is to be with me. When the others scatter when I reach into the brooder, she comes to me to be held. I absolutely love her. I picked this breed because they're a heritage breed. I like that they will be productive for longer and they are dual purpose (except Princess). I like knowing that I'm contributing to a breed that was once in trouble of being lost.

I too thought they were somewhat the same as barred rocks and also thought they were bantam birds but now that i know they are not, i am considering trying them. :)

Anyone have any suggestions for where to get them though? Would love to try real, quality, heritage ones, not hatchery quality again if I'm gonna try them. Though I do love my hatchery birds.

I have 3 that were cast offs from a friend who rolls his girls over every 2 years or so. I call them the "Gray Ladies." They free range with the rest of the flock and frequently get left behind when the roo moves his girls to fresh ground. They can be noisy when they realize that they are no longer among the rest. I have 5 chicks being raised by a broody Orpington. Since my flock is polyglot, and my roo is an Ameraucana/RIR cross, these chicks will be mutts for sure. But, I would like larger eggs than I get from the Gray Ladies now.

Here's my man

Try the Dominique Club of America's website or the Dominique thread here. Third choice would be Cackle hatchery since they have been consulting with Mark Fields, a Dominique expert, to improve their stock. Oh, you can order hatching eggs from Nantahala Farms as well. I ended up finding a local breeder who has placed highly with his birds in 2 shows recently and I have 8 of his eggs in the incubator due to hatch next Monday. Can't wait!! Good luck!
