Chicken Breed Focus - Langshan

Great write up on the breed! Love the beautiful emerald shine on those feathers! I didn't realize they were so big!
Thanks for featuring a threatened breed!

May I present...Joana/Token

I have 13 Langshan chicks coming March 2, 10 hens and 3 roosters, blue and black, i had a blue hen last year and she was beautiful but i had a friend who kept offering more and more money until i gave in and sold her, she is his favorite chicken and i an sorry i sold her.

@Kelsie2290 I ordered ten blacks and five (their max) blues from SandHill. They couldn't fill the order so sent the other chicks on my order and packing peanuts. When I got the box it said it contained four langshans, yeah better than none, except there was only one and only 22 chicks not 25....?
You can tell at a couple days old it's going to be a tall one. This is a pic the day I got it.

That’s a cute little chick!
And I didn’t know you could order chickens. 😮

Langshans have lost popularity over the years and I have no idea why. They are really big birds, good eating and excellent layers and setters. The first couple years I had them I didn't sell many. But I convinced some people to buy a few and try them when they were here buying chicks. They were looking for good layers and something to show. Well they ended up taking a grand champion over all win with one of the birds so now I'm getting a lot of request for them.
If you are into letting birds hatch a few eggs, these hens keep their eggs cleaner than any other breed I have ever raised. That's also a plus if you are just eating their eggs. The boys have nice big breasts and are really tall. Their colors shine as well.

I had this beautiful 8 week old Croad Langshan cockerel who I absolutely adore. He was born splay legged, so I hand raised him for a while, though he integrated right back into the flock with no issues! I was a little sad when I saw he was obviously a roo, because I wanted those purple eggs! But I have been gifted this slightly younger Langshan Pullet! I am so excited! Say hello to Sam and Daisy! 😀
